Tomato seedlings

These tree tomato seedlings are growing in a narrow bed between a parking lot and a red brick building. They have germinated from seeds that wintered over from tomatoes that fell from last year's tomato plants, which in their turn were also "volunteers" (not planted on purpose, but grew from the seeds from the previous year's abandoned crop of tomatoes). It shows the resilience of seeds to adverse temperatures until more propitious climate reappears and growing conditions return.

The seedlings exemplify geotropism, with the roots being positively geotropic, growing in the direction of gravity; while the stems and leaves are negatively geotropic, as they grow up and opposite gravitational force.

Like the parent plant, and given proper care, including sunlight, and plenty of water, one hopes that these seedlings

will grow to maturity, flower, be pollinated and bear fruit...FRESH TOMATOES!!!
