Working in the Winter

Sub-zero temperatures on their own aren't enough to bring a railroad to its knees, as evidenced by this scene from north Topeka on the morning on January 15, 2024. At the time of this photo, it was -4°, and UP's LMC40 was still on its way out of town, like it does most every day.

 

Here, after the passing of the Track Inspector on his Hi-Rail truck, the conductor is on the ground at the Squirrel Switch to line 1629 onto Main 1 at CP Z068. This was all just minutes after the passing of two other eastbounds; a manifest out of the yard, and a stack from the GSR.
