One More Piece of the Rock Removed
While so much of the Rock Island remains, portions of it continue to leave us, as evidenced by this scene from downtown Topeka. Looking northeast from the corner of 1st and Quincy, workers have recently removed the ex-RI tracks that served the original RI depot at 1st and Kansas, a number of the industries in the area, and connected them to both the Missouri Pacific and Santa Fe.
The building in the foreground here had originally been the Mutual Ice & Cold Storage building, and currently, Leonard Meat & Produce uses the space. The further building is the recently renovated Parkhurst Davis Mercantile Co. building. Later, Theo Poehler moved into the same structure.
