Lockdown generosity

The staff at the restaurant, 1051GWR, closed by the pandemic, decided to use their skills to cater for the elderly, vulnerable, NHS and keyworkers, providing 800 free meals a day.

The restaurant was able to reopen for business during the summer. The restaurateur, David Maguire, was subsequently awarded an MBE for his work during the chaotic early days of lockdown. Immediately after the announcement of his award the business had to close its doors again as a result of the resurgence of the pandemic.

The building was designed by Sir John James Burnet as Kelvinside Railway Station, 1896, to blend in with the nearby grand villas along Great Western Road.
