Georgian Shopfronts
by Curry15
I'm hunting down Georgian shopfronts. All architect designed shops have gone including many by Papworth and a series of chemists' shops by George Maddox. An exceptional shopfront was Birch & Birch at 15 Cornhill,(the celebrated cooks and confectioners) because of it's importance it was acquired by the V&A. It's not been on display for years. One of the best is in Eastcheap, there are a few in St. James's, Soho and Spitalfields. Many are no longer shops, either offices or homes, but at least they are still here. I've researched every one of these to make quite sure that they are Georgian, several have been removed as they turned out to be early Victorian, and attached to a Georgian house. There are many 'Georgian' shopfronts on flickr that aren't Georgian. It's easy enough to find 'British Listed Buildings' has all of the information.
I have finally produced a book called London Shopfronts which is produced by blurb.
