Léon Foucault, the French physicist who celebrated his 194th birthday last 18/9/13 was best known for demonstrating the Earth’s rotation with his Foucault Pendulum in my phablet drawings. But he also created the more mobile Gyroscope, a set of rotor rings that could be held in your hand like a compass to measure the Earth’s rotation wherever you were.
