The conductor will dismount, jump in the company pickup and drive to the next crossing to flag it (they flag every crossing between Worthington and Luverne). The hogger will meanwhile drop his speed from a comfortable 30 mph along the Union Pacific, to a crawl of 8 to 10 mph for the 35 mile journey back to home base at Luverne. Their 80 mile round trip to and from Worthington typically takes the crew 7 to 10 hours.
