Transcendtal Subject, "Man dancing in the street", Ted Szukalski

1. "It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude." — Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Complete Prose Works Of Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. Emerson, a proponent of transcendentalism, encourages the finding of ones self beyond what is expected by society. The concept of transcendentalism is often associated with a renewed relationship with nature. Although nature may be a great locationt to discover who you may want to be, or truly are, Emerson encourages one to keep this solitude and joy while also in the confines of the busy world around us.

3. The man dancing in the street is the epitome of Emerson's assertion as well as the overall concept of the transcendental subject. He is solely concerned with himself and what makes him happy. He can be regarded as a member of society by his dress and therefore fits into what is suspected of him. However, his spontaneous dancing allows his individuality to made evident to all around.
