1908 2013
The old Grand Trunk rail bridge (completed in 1908) and the new South Circle Gordie Howe Bridge (completed in 2013) in Saskatoon. From a calm evening last summer. I took this image as part of my 26 bridges project and was happy with it as the best of the bunch. But I had not found the time to process the rest yet so had not posted it to flickr.
The world being the small place that it is I ended up being in touch with the wife of the head contractor on the build of the new bridge. She is the new mother in law of a friend's daughter at work, and this friend bought a couple of bridge pictures of mine for a wedding gift to her daughter. She liked my bridge photos and asked if I had anything of the new bridge for a retirement gift for her husband. This happened to be about a week after I took this photo, so I did a rough process and sent her a file. She liked it enough that she bought it in a 20x24 print to give to her husband. I had to push the processing pretty hard because of the shadows on the under structure of the new bridge, but in the end I quite like the result and it's the first large colour print that I've sold. The title of the print was chosen to signify the year that her husband's work on the bridge was completed. Sometimes it really is a small world.
