The Stuart Highway, the principal north-south route through the central interior of mainland Australia, is often referred to simply as "The Track". It is a segment of Australia's Highway 1 extending from Darwin in the north, to Port Augusta, in the in the south—a distance of 2,834 kilometres (1,761 mi).

The railway between Adelaide and Darwin and the overland telegraph line also follow Stuart’s route. “Doing’ Stuarts Highway has changed my opinion of Stuart from respect to absolute awe.
