Threshold

My law, the ancient Chinese felt, the force that shapes me, does not work into me but only approaches me from universal cosmic spaces. There is nothing independent about me at all. I am only, so to speak, "focussed into existence" by what is above and behind me.

The divine home, that inner space which man can go into with the help of his religion and feel at rest in, is outside. Those strange gates that stand all by themselves in the open Chinese landscape say the very same thing. As gates, they signify an "entrance" or a "threshold." But on the other side of these gates there is no temple. In fact, there is nothing at all that would suggest an interior space. There is only "world." They lead "into" the outside itself.
