Peugeot 2008 GT Line Blue HDi s/s

Covered 430 miles in this one, a 50/50 split as a passenger and driver. I'd summarise this as being far from the worst car I've ever driven, but also far from a car I'd actually like to own.

Good bits

Fairly practical despite relatively narrow footprint. Quite an attractive looking interior design, especially in this trim level.

Not bad performance from 1.6 diesel unit.

Comfortable ride on rough roads.

Quite composed at motorway speeds.

Possibly useful snow driving mode, although this is only 2 wheel drive, so it'd be interesting to see how effective the 'off road' driving modes really are. I've driven an earlier 2008 on a light off road course previously and the driving modes didn't make a huge amount of difference.

Bad bits

Absolute number one on this list is the handbrake which was frankly horrible to use - to the extent that both of us who drove it would try and avoid using it at junctions etc, putting unnecessary stress on the clutch.

The rear parcel shelf fell off every time the boot opened - there was no option to tether it to the tailgate.

Clutch on this example was dire. Possibly because it's had quite a bit of abuse as a hire car (or due to point one above!), but a very high biting point for a car with 12k on the clock.

Interior quality could have been better; quite a bit of hard plastic.

Small steering wheel is rather daft and it obscures the instruments in a number of column positons which I think is unforgivably poor design in a modern car.

Not a lot of fun to be had on A-roads either. Not really a car you'd buy for its dynamic ability, but it did exhibit some slightly odd characteristics when pushing on, such as being quite badly unsettled by bumps mid bend.

Overall verdict: Average. Probably a very practical proposition for a young family, but I think there are far better cars out there for that type of use.
