Stoneware Wren Figurine

The Andersen Stoneware Wren Sculpture is orchestrated rhythm of planes, curves and masses. The horizontal directional movement of the beak balances the angular uplifting movement of the tail. The wings are gently sloping downward planes with one edge a rhythmic repetition of the rounded form of the wren=s breast. The curvilinear movement suddenly accelerates in an upward swirling motion that intersects with the flat angular plane of the tail before swooping downward again to meet the level surface of the stoneware bird=s back. The artistic blend of rest and movement sustains the viewer=s attention to the form, while the reserved and spontaneous decoration elaborates without distracting. The stoneware wren is decorated with fluid wax resist brushwork over the Andersen=s original ceramic brown decorating slip. The ceramic bird is then dipped in the Andersen=s white matte glaze. The finely crafted Andersen ceramic wren sculpture is three inches long.
