Trench Watch

The trench watch was a type of watch that came into use by the military during World War 1, as pocket watches were not practical in combat. It was a transitional design between pocket watches and wristwatches, incorporating features of both. Up until this time wristwatches were seen as a womans watch.

This example is one of my own dated 1909 and made of sterling silver. It keeps perfect time even after 114 years.

The chap lay down in the photo is my grandfather, Christopher McGuinness, who was killed in action on 15th October 1914. His son, my Dad, was born 19th October 1909 the same year my watch was made.
