Unicorn Bow View

Keel laid in 1822, finished in 1824 and never fitted out as a seagoing vessel, now the oldest British Warship still afloat.

From the condition of the hull it's a moot point whether she'll be floating too many decades more. Great rotten areas are evident, planks so full of dry (wet??) rot that they're twisted and crumbling.

It's tragic.

Scott's Discovery gets all the attention and funding in Dundee which is after all the City of Discovery as some official decided to dub the place.

We don't have much of a record of looking after our irreplaceable old ships. The Unicorn is in a sorry state but compared to the clipper ship Carrick now a bare hull over in Glasgow with a council bent on her 'disassembly', she's minted.

Go to visit the Unicorn. Your £5 will go a small way to helping the owners to keep her from further decay.

I'm joining the Unicorn's Friends - it'll cost me £15. Six pints of beer, a decent curry meal?

Come and join me (us?)

I guess I'm a convert.
