Schrot und Korn - in the dictionary
like for instance: "ein Mann von echtem Schrot und Korn", literally: "a man of genuine grain and corn". And that translates into "a man of the right sort". Or take this: "Ein Mann von altem Schrot und Korn" turns into "a man of the old stamp". I like that. And it is still part and parcel of my own German (the dictionary is from 1975).
