Purple sandpiper (Calidris maritima) at Barnegat Light, New Jersey. In the past I have found purple sandpipers hard to find and secretive, often hidden in the dark openings between jetty rocks. There were probably over 30 at the jetty here and some were quite tame. I think many of the birds (including the harlequins earlier in my stream) are habituated to people at this spot because of the foot traffic on the jetty. The jetty rocks are flat on top and easy to walk on along the inlet until you get to the ocean, where they are wet and uneven.
