Space Shuttle: 20 Years "Retrieval" page

"You'll see his handwriting is pretty shaky, but he did the best he could," wrote the organizer. Quite a change from "just" four years ago.

Um, no apologies necessary. And if you get the chance to see astronauts, do so while you can. Even the youngest from the first group specifically for the shuttle are in their mid-60s, like Anna Fisher.

Allen signed this double-truck from the "Space Shuttle: The First 20 Years book." I had met him in 2012, during the transfer of shuttle Discovery to Udvar-Hazy. (Because of my book's condition I no longer scan pages for posting; for this, a photo was taken.)

When he and the astronauts came through the line on their way back to the museum at the Discovery transfer event, Allen said he'd sign inside. However, I never found him. I did hear, though, he signed on other days he was at Udvar-Hazy.

Later on, I sent him a photo, and got the OK to send him my book. But wary of the time it took to get others to get back items - including reports of non-responses - I decided to wait until a via venue opportunity arose.

Unfortunately, Dale Gardner died in 2014 and so cannot sign the page. Gardner aided in the capture and retrieval of the two satellites on STS-51-A.

Allen was the No. 206 overall signature in the book. 10 June 2016, DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind.
