American Livens Projectors

Although the American 30th Engineer Regiment "Gas and Flame" used flamethrowers in combat on an extremely limited basis, most of the unit's fighting was done with Livens projectors and Stokes mortars.

 

These loaded Livens projectors were photographed at Soissons. Note the wire leads attached to the powder charges beneath the gas or oil drums.
