The Triumph Herald was originally launched in 1959 as a cheap family 2 door Saloon and powered by 948cc S4 engine. Body design was by the Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti and the car was offered in saloon, convertible, coupé, van and estate models.
Despite the popularity of the Herald, by 1960 Standard-Triumph was in financial difficulties, and was taken over by Leyland Motors Ltd in 1961., releasing finances to further develope the Herald.
The car was relaunched in 1961 as the Herald 1200, now powered by an 1147cc engine. The new model featured white rubber bumpers, a wooden laminate dashboard and improved seating. Quality control was also tightened up. Disc brakes also became an option from 1963.
