The front engine, rear wheel drive Celica had proved dominant in the African Group B rallies of the 1980's, but was at a disadvantage on the twistier European rallies. The 222D was a secret 4WD project to replace the Celica in Group S and potentially Group B. Based on an MR2 it shared very little with the production car. This race ready mid engine 4WD weighs 750kg and the transversly mounted turbocharged engine is said to develope 750bhp.
There is also rumoured to be a six cylinder version.
