Introduced in 1948 with a 1.6ltr petrol engine of 50bhp replaced in 1952-3 by a 2.0ltr Siamese bore engine, meaning no water passages between the pistons. For the 1954 model year saw the 86 inch wheelbase replace the 80 inch and the introduction of a 107 inch wheelbase Pick Up version.

In Britain the Land Rover occupies a strange position in the taxation system. The original vehicle was classified as a commercial vehicle and as such was exempt from Purchase Tax, however this meant that as a Commercial vehicle it was subject to a speed limit of 30mph on British roads. After an appeal to the Law Lords, following the prosecution of a driver charged with exceeding this limit, the vehicle was reclassified as multi-purpose and only to classified a commercial if used for that purpose. Although not often applied today this means that a Land Rover registered as commercial has a 60mph speed limit, those not registered as such can drive up to the National Speed limit of 70mph.
