R O P Motor Spirits (1924-48)
Russian Oil Products was a distributor of motor spirit (petrol) in the UK, known for importing petrol from Russia, from the early 20th Century.
By January 1912, ninety-seven Anglo-Russian oil companies had registered in London. Distributed between western Caspian shores and Central Asian steppes, these free-standing entities reportedly controlled a combined nominal capital of over seventeen million pounds, or more than one hundred times that value in today’s dollars. And though most disappeared within a decade’s time thanks to the Bolsheviks. But in the case of Russian Oil Products (R.O.P.) it involved direct Soviet investment. R O P was established in 1924, with its London office, at 153, Moorgate, London EC2, it sold and distributed top grade Soviet gasoline, under cutting established petroleum companies, throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland for nearly a quarter century, taking over 8 per cent of the market share by 1931. Though unlike its competitors, however, ROP operated for reasons other than profit. At first, the company prioritized acquiring British Sterling, a convertible currency that Soviet leaders used to purchase modern machinery on global markets and industrialize Russia at a breakneck pace. Later, it prioritized acquiring trade secrets through bribery and espionage, facts well-known to British intelligence that contributed to its closure
In 1948 R.O.P. was acquired by Regent Oils which allowed it to use the erstwhile companies distribution network, however the importation of oil products from Russia became less likely due to the fragile geo-political situation.
