Raleigh produced mopeds from 1958-71 the first with an engine design by Vincento Piatti - the designer of Mini-Motor. In 1960 the company became part of the huge Tube Investments conglomerate, along with fellow moped manufacturers, Norman, Phillips and Hercules and rationalisation was sought. After an unsuccessful prototype it was decided to licence the French Mobylette range of moped and future machines were effectively re-badged Mobylettes.

The Raleigh RM6 was introduced in May 1963, sharing the same frame and engine as the Mobylette and built under licence from Motobécane in France. It featured variable speed automatic clutch, leading-link forks, swinging arm, drum brakes, dual seat. and was initially available in Pearl Grey and Charcoal Grey. In June 1965 telescopic forks were fitted and the model became available in Fire Red as well as the Pearl Grey, the Charcoal Grey now deleted. In September 1965 legshields previously an option came as standard and in December 1965 Neptune Blue was added to the range. From here it remained basically unaltered until discontinued in February 1971
