Yes it looks younger than 1893, but this engine has effectively had two lives. Originally built in 1893 as a 10 ton Road Roller, to an order by the Middleton Corporation for whom it provided 30 years service. It was then sold in 1923 to The Lancashire Road Rolling Company, joining their fleet after a major overhaul by Charles Price and Sons of Broadheath, Altrincham. It was employed in the Lancashire area, on road maintenance work, working until requisitioned by the RAF during the Second World War, employed laying runways. At the end of the war he was in a very sorry state, and Nicolsons scrap yard. Stripped of the front rolls he languished nose down in the dirt with rot setting in to the boiler and firebox.

That should have been the sorry end to the story, BUT ...

In 1992, it seems as a result of a bet he was rescued and restored, with the decision at the time to restore him as a steam tractor rather than a road roller as the front had now gone. A few owners later and now in the hands of Rob Houghton an in depth restoration took place. Many parts were re-engineered or renewed, the original cylinder was cracked and was replaced with a near identical one.

Vanguard has since passed to its current owners, Chris and Tsitsi Adamson of Heatley Heath, Lymm, Cheshire
