Pneumatic tyres started to appear on bicycles from around 1890, proving a great boom to the industry, by increasing comfort and speed. Thus moving the cycling from a recreational activity enjoyed by a few enthusiasts into everday usage. This example from the Star Cycle Company of Wolverhampton has an upright sloping top tube, pnuematic trres a fixed wheel and a single spoon type brake .

Star Motor Company (1898-32)

Star was founded by the Lisle family in 1893 originally as Sharratt and Lisle to make bicycles, changing its name to Star Cycle Company in 1896. The first cars appeared in 1898
