Louis Renault built his firsr car at Billancourt France, a very small tubular framed machine with a wheelbase of 43 inches and a De Dion engine, driving through a shaft to a bevel gear on the rear axle, at a time when rival manufacturers were mostly using chain or belt drive. The three speed gearbox had direct drive on top gear. Assisted by his brothers he set up the company with production commencing using De Dion or Aster engines, development was on going and by 1902 Renault were using engines of their own design, and were building racing which were an integral part of the company. Marcel Renault won the 1902 in a four cylinder car. A team of six cars were prepared for the 1903 Paris Madrid race, but the race was marred by tragedy, Marcel Renault was killed and the race stopped at Bordeaux, Louis did not race again
