Built as a two door Coupe and designed by Giovanni Michelotti of Vignale and based on the Maserati 3500GT. The Sebring was named after Maseratis victory at the 1957, 12 hours of Sebring, in the USA
The models seven year production run can be split into two distinct series. Series 1 1962-65 and Series 2 1965-69.
The Series 1 debuted at the Salon International de l'Auto 1962 and again at the Salone dell'automobile di Torino in 1963. Powered by the same 3495cc fuel injected straight six of the Maserati 3500GT, mated to a Borg-Warner automatic transmission, the car had a claimed top speed of 137mph. and supplied with Pirelli Cinturato 205VR15 tyres. The engine was uprated in 1964 to 3692cc though only a handful of Series 1 cars were so equipped
The Series 2 was introduced in 1965 with lightly redesigned headlamps, modernized bumpers, new turn signals in front, and new side grilles replacing the lower extraction vents At the rear, aside from the squared off bumpers, the taillights were now mounted horizontally rather than vertically and the bootlid opening was narrowed . The Series II rode on larger 205x15 Pirelli Cinturatos. Along with the 3500cc and 3700cc engines a 4012cc was added. It remained in production until 1968, when financial constraints forced Maserati to drop its older models from production. No major updates took place over the last three years of production, except for a slight power gain for the 4000, now up to 265.
