In much the same way as Toyota created the Lexus marque, Genesis was created as a stand alone brand by Hyundai in November 2015.

Genesis models are designed in Rüsselsheim, Germany, Namyang, South Korea, and Irvine, United States; and produced in Ulsan, South Korea.

The companies principle staff read like a whos who of the Automotive world, Manfred Fitzgerald, former director of brand and design at Lamborghini, is executive vice president, Luc Donckerwolke, former design director of Volkswagen subsidiaries Bentley, Lamborghini and Audi is head of design, Peter Schreyer, formerly at Volkswagen and principal designer of the VW Golf, New Beetle, and the Audi TT is President and Chief of Design management, Albert Biermann, former head of BMW M performance division, oversees tuning and performance and is executive vice president of performance development and high performance vehicles, Sang-yup Lee, former designer of the C-6 Chevrolet Corvette and Bentley Continental GT, and Alexander (Sasha) Selipanov, former designer of the Bugatti Chiron, lead exterior and advanced design, and Fayez Rahman, former development leader at BMW, is vice-president of architecture development

The second generation G60, known internally as the RG3 was designed by Luc Donkerwolke resembling its SUV counterpart, The vehicle is built upon the M3 platform, designated towards mid-size luxury vehicles that use a rear- or all-wheel drive basis. The design language of the Genesis includes quad-headlamps, and a large crest grille. The side profile features a parabolic line, and a fastback-type side view. The rear uses taillamp styling similar to the headlamps and has Nappa leather seats

The RG3 G80 was officially revealed via an online livestream on March 30, 2020, and went on sale in the US during the summer of that year There are three engine options – a 2.5-liter gasoline turbo engine, a 3.5-liter gasoline turbo engine, or a 2.2-liter diesel engine. The brand claims 19 percent of the new platform uses aluminium, saving 243 lb (110 kg) compared to the previous model which used steel. Compared to the outgoing G80, and has a 6 per cent increased tensile strength

Hyundai revealed the facelifted G80 on December 14, 2023, for the 2024 model year. The rear bumper now features hidden exhaust outlets with V shaped chrome trim, reminiscent of the battery electric G80 variant.
