The E28 5 series was introduced in 1981 replacing the the 1972-84 E12 5 Series.BMW 520i (E28) (1983)..
Designed by Claus Luthe styling changes to this model included revised headlights, thicker rubber bumper surrounds and large rectangular taillights. Mechanical changes included the addition of a six-cylinder diesel engine (in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms) and an automatic transmission.
The entry level engine was four cylinder a 1.8 litre found in the 518 and later 518i with the remainder of the range powered by six cylinder engines from 2 litre to 3.5 litre petrol and a six cylinder 2.4 litre Diesel in both normally aspirated and Turbo charged guises.
Cars were all well appointed and sold well, creating an unintentional problem for BMW as they squeezed the market for the more expensive 7 Series.
