Yanmar Co., Ltd. are a Japanese diesel engine, heavy machinery and agricultural machinery manufacturer founded in Osaka, Japan in 1912. Manufacturing and selling engines used Internationally for marine useage, heavy machinery, construction equipment, agricultural equipment and generator sets. It also manufactures and sells, climate control systems, and aquafarming systems, in addition to providing a range of remote monitoring services.
The company was founded by Magokichi Yamaoka in 1912 and based in Osaka, Japan originally for the manufacture pf petrol powered engines, begining production of kerosene fuelled engines in 1920, in 1933 it launched the world's first practical small diesel engine.
In 1961 the agricultural division was founded, it also supplied small diesel engines to John Deere for their mini-tractors and smaller implements, and to Thermo King to power coolers used in refrigerated trucks and trailers.
More recently in 2016 Yanamar increased its stake in Indian agricultural company International Tractors (producers of the Sonalika brand), and forged a partnership with Toyota to develope the Next Generation Hulls for boats. In 2019 the company opened facilities in China, India and the Phillipines. In 2016 the companies consolidated revenue was 703.8 billion dollars..
The name [Yanmar] is a combination of the Yanma Dragonfly (known by names such as Oniyanma and Ginyanma) and the "Yama" from the name of the company founder Magokichi Yamaoka.
