524 Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool
Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool (Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral)
Although Liverpool became an Anglican diocese in 1880 it had no pro-Cathedral. It was agreed in 1902 that a new Cathedral would be built and architects were invited to submit their plans. Of over 100 entries a design by 22 year old architectural student George Gilbert Scott was the winning entry. Built on St. James' Mount in the city centre it is the fifth largest Cathedral and in the World and rivals the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, in New York as the worlds largest Anglican Cathedral. Liverpool was only the third Anglican Cathedral built in Britain since the Reformation of the Church in the 16th century, the others being the complete rebuild of St. Paul's in London following the fire of London in 1666 and Truro Cathedral in the 19th century.
The Tower was completed in 1942 but construction was halted by the Second World War and hindered by rising costs. The Cathedral was finally finished in 1978 eighteen years after Scott's death.
Ironically Scott was of the Roman Catholic faith, while Sir Edward Luytens architect of the origin design for Liverpool's Roman Catholic Cathedral was Anglican. The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King was began to Luytens design in 1933 but it was deemed to expensive. Finally Architect Sir Fredderick Gibberd submitted a design work of which commenced in 1962 and was finished and consecrated in 1967.
Thus within the space of 11 years Liverpool had two Cathedrals
