Designed by Ron Hickman, the Lotus Elan was introduced in 1962, the first Lotus road car to use a steel backbone chassis with a fibreglass body weighing in at approximately 1,500 lbs it was the embodiment of Colin Chapmans minimum weight design philosophy. The Elan was technologically advanced with a DOHC 1,558 cc engine, four-wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, and 4-wheel independent suspension. The Elan remained in production until 1973, with constant updates the saw firstly the 1500, followed by 1600 Series 1s, the Series 2, Series 3, Series 4, and finally the Sprint

As with the earlier series Elan, with pop up headlights and GRP bodies built on a backbone frame, all independent suspension and disc brakes all round. The Series 4 is

recognisable by its wider wheel arches to take low profile tyres. Servo assisted brakes now standard and rocker type switches.
