The Series II Lotus Elise was lauched in 2002, replacing the original Elise due to the earlier cars failure to comply with the new European regulations around crash sustainability. Leaving Lotus in need of a partner to develope the new car. General Motors offered to partner/fund the project, in return for a badged and GM-engined version of the car for their European brands, Opel and Vauxhall. which was destined to become the VX220

The Series 2 had a modified version of the Series 1 chassis and the same K-series engine with a Lotus developed ECU. The entry model was the 111S producing around 160bhp until 2005 when the Rover k series engine no longer conformed to the new USA emission regulations.

When Rover died the entry level, K-Series-powered Elise went with it along with a loyal customer base that couldn't stretch to a whopping £29,945 (in basic trim) for the Toyota-powered 'R'. The new S is £6000 cheaper powered by a distant relative of the trick VVTLi engine, built by Yamaha for the Toyota Celica. The 134bhp, 1.8-litre engine sitting under the rear clamshell is lifted from the current Corolla. Unlike the 'R' it’s not been fettled by Yamaha, meaning different internals, no electronic valve lift and one less cog in the gearbox.

The second generation Elise had three additions to its line up for 2008. The naturally aspirated standard Elise continued to produce 189bhp, while the Elise SC had a non-intercooled supercharger producing 218 hp reducing 0-60 mph time from 4.9 to 4.7 seconds, and 4.3 seconds for the Sports package Elise SC the he NA Elise styling is similar to the prior model years. The Elise SC, however, is distinguishable from the NA version by a rear spoiler identical to the Type 72-D edition spoiler and new wheels..
