055 Captain Howey and the Captain Howey Hotel (late 19th Century)
Captain Howey Hotel (late 19th Century)
The Hotel is situated in New Romney just opposite the Romney Hythe and Dunchurch Railway which it pre-dates.
The hotel was built in the late 19th centuary at the New Romney terminus of the railway branch line from Ashford and originally was called the Station Hotel, to serve weekend visitors to the Marsh and the neighbouring prestigous Littlestone Golf Club. At the time Littlestone had been identified by the railways as a potential large resort in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and was very popular with visitors from London and carriages would have been housed in the stables.
In the late 1920's Captain J.E.P. HOWEY built the adjacent RHDR, which opened in 1927 reviving the Hotels trade The pub was named after him following his death in the 1960s.
CAPTAIN HOWEY
John Edwards Presgrave "Jack" Howey was born in 1886 in Coleshill House, Amersham to a wealthy family. He was educated at Eton, serving in World War I as a Captain in the Bedfordshire Regiment, also serving in the 13th Hussars and, finally an observer the Royal Flying Corps. He was shot down and captured in 1916. He retured to England post war a took up motor racing and was a great freind of Count Louis Zbrowsky. Following his marriage he was persuaded by his wife to find a less dangerous pastime, and he entered the world of railways, he and Zbrowsky planned to build their own railway and examined a number of sights, but when shown the New Romney area decided that this would be an ideal location. Sadly Zborowski died while racing in the Italian Grand Prix in 1923. Howey pressed on alone with his dream of the railway which finally came to fruition in 1927, prior to the openening the future King Goerge VI drove an inaugral locomotive with 100 passengers. Howey went on to enjoy the railway for many years, until his death at the age of 77 in 1963.
