The Vitesse was styled by Giovanni Michelotti, and launched as a six cylinder 1600cc model in 1962 as a Saloon and Convertible, along simular lines as the smaller Triumph Herald. With twin slanting head lights, giving an instant identity separate to the single lights of the Herals.
In 1966 the Vitesse was upgraded to 2 litre with the in line engine of the Triumph GT6, giving 95bhp, and relaunched as a seperate model.
here were detail modifications for the 2-litre, including a stronger all synchromesh gearbox and uprated brakes, and an improved stronger differential than the Vitesse 1.6. But the increased power highlighted the deficiencies of the rear suspension.
A problem addressed with the launch of the Mk.2 Vitesse in 1968.
