The Yamaha YZF-R1, or R1, is an open class sport bike, or superbike, produced since 1998. Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 after redesigning the Genesis engine. Compacting the engine made the engine much shorter, allowing the wheelbase to be shortened allowing he frame design to place the weight of the engine in the frame optimising the centre of gravity.

 

The bike has been regularly updated, perhaps most signicantly for the 2007 model year when the engine was reconfigured with a 16 valve rather than 20 valve head, and again for the 2009 model year
