The Triumph Stag was designed by Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti envisioned as a luxury sports car, the Stag was designed to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz SL class models. All Stags were four-seater convertible coupés, with a B-pillar "roll bar" hoop. connected to the windscreen frame by a T-bar. A body color removable hard top with defrost wires on the rear window, full headliner and lever operated quarter windows was a popular factory option
The engine unique to the Stag was light using aluminium cylinder heads, and a superior overhead cam shaft design, Triumph dispensed with their unreliable fuel injection, instead favouring Stromberg-Zenith carburettors which helped reach the US emissions standards. The body was styled by Giovanni Michelotti and produced as a convertible or hard top coupe.Unofficially the car evolved through Early Mark 1 1970 Mark 1 1971-72/3, Mark 2 (1973) late Mark 2 (1974-77). Visually the Mark 2 has two coach lines, but minor changes slowly evolved
