The Porsche 944 evolved from the earlier 924. Porsche reworked the platform and abandoned the Audi engine, replacing it with a new all alloy 2.5 litre straight 4 rated at 150bhp. Coupled with a revised body, interior upgrades, and upgraded brakes and suspension.

The S2 was introduced in 1989 and powered by a 208bhp 3.0 litre engine and amongst styling changes featured a new integrated fromt bumper. With the S2 a Cabriolet version was available for the first time in a 944.
