The Ford Cortina is a medium-sized family car initially designed for Ford of Britain The Cortina was produced in five generations from 1962 until 1982. The name was inspired by the name of the Italian ski resort Cortina d'Ampezzo, site of the 1956 Winter Olympics. Several Cortinas were driven down the Cortina Olympic bobsled run at that resort, a publicity stunt which Ford called "Cortina Auto-Bobbing."
The Mk.1 Cortina was designed by by Roy Brown Jr., previously designer of the Ford USA Ford Edsel, and was launched just ahead of the 1962 London Motor as either a 1198 cc or 1499 cc as either two or four door saloon or five door estate and the more sporting 1499 cc Gt or the Lotus Cortina of 1600 cc Twin Cam. The car was designed to be economical to buy, cheap to run, and easy and inexpensive to produce and was pitched against the BMC medium sized Farina range of Austin A60-Morris Oxford et al, and the Vauxhall Victor. Originally to be called Ford Consul 225, the car was launched as the Consul Cortina until a modest facelift in 1964, which introduced a wider grille and an airflow vent on the C pillar.after which it was sold simply as the Cortina
