264 Lochheed Neptune SP-2H
Lochheed Neptune SP-2H
Developement of the Lockheed Neptune began in 1941 as a maritime anti-submarine aircraft for the United States Navy. Entering service in 1947, more than 100 were built and exported to countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, France and Netherlands.
By the late 1970s the aircraft was becoming obsolete for its designated miltary duties and by the mid-1980s all had been withdrawn from active service, although some remained in civilian use as fire fighting tankers (water bombers)
Four RAF Coastal Command Squadrons were equipped with Neptunes from 1952, as a stop gap whilst the RAF waited for delivery of Shackletons and by 1957 all had been returned to the States.
