Founded in 1899 in Sandbach, Cheshire as Hancock + Foden the company started experimenting with Steam Wagons. In 1901 the business was registered as E.Foden + Sons and series production got underway. The first new development being a five tonner joined briefly in 1905 by a two ton version. Improvement continued and in 1925 the C type 5 ton was launched with a higher driving position, cam operated brakes, Ackermann steering and a speed of 29 khp. the same two cylinder compound was modified to produce 23 bhp and an articulated six wheeler with a 12 ton payload followed. Steam development continued culminating in a two cylinder high speed 90bhp model with shaft drive, four wheel steam brakes and a top speed of 96 kmp. Withdrawn in 1932 in favour of Diesel powered lorries the last steam engines were built in 1934. The first Foden Diesel was a six ton R type with a Gardner 6L2 engine and four speed transmission. By 1935 the range had extended to 10 and 12 ton six wheelers powered by Gardner. Development also saw the introduction of Foden buses, and later Rolls Royce powered dump trucks. Factories in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa came on stream producing vehicles for local conditions and in 1973 the company was awarded a £ 10 million NATO contract, to construct 4, 6, and 8 wheeled military vehicles By 1977 the company was in a much weaker condition having encountered problems with the Defence Contract and narrowly avoided a Rolls Royce takeover. New models were needed and the 1977 Scottisk Motor Show saw the unveiling of the new Haulmaster and Fleetmaster tractor units of 32 and 38 tons. This did not prevent the company entering receivership in 1980 and a cessation of production. This led to acquisition by the US Paccar Inc, builder of Kenworth and Pacific trucks and the renaming of the company to the Sandbach Engineering Co.
