The Porsche 997 was launched in 2004 as an evolution of the 996, with revised exterior styling, the rear bodywork was a total of 88 mm (3.5 in) wider than its predecessor. However, the most notable aesthetic difference between the 997 and the 996 was the return to oval headlights like those of pre-996 Carreras, with separate indicator units and the interior was restyled.
.
The 997 Turbo debuted at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show it features new front bumpers with LED turning signal lights in a horizontal bar in the air intakes. fog lights are moved to the corners large air intakes each side of the rear wheel, the retractable wing feature of the 996 Turbo is carried over.
The engine is based on the 964/GT1 design and was rated at 470 bhp with the use of a turbocharger featuring a two stage resonance intake system. The Borg-Warner Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) is the first used on a Porsche road car. It uses guide vanes located in front of the turbine wheel that modulate inflow angle and speed. An optional Sports Chrono package allows the 911 Turbo to overboost for 10 seconds increasing peak torque over a narrow rev range. Both manual and Tiptronic transmission is available with respective 0-62mph times of 3.9 or 3.7 seconds, with an official top speed of 198mph.
A second generation 997 was launched for model years 2009-12 The updated Porsche 911 (called 997 Gen II internally at Porsche and 997.2 informally by enthusiasts) included following changes: new engines, revised suspension and front bumper, headlamps with newly optional dual HID projectors, a new LED taillamp shape, and LED turnsignals, redesigned sports exhaust and the Tiptronic option was replaced with PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
The facelifted 997 Turbo was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motorshow. It received a completely new 6-cylinder, 3.8 litre boxer engine delivering 500 hp with revised Borg-Warner variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbos. The 911 Turbo is now only available with a manual gearbox or the optional 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox,
