The Chevette supermini was introduced in the in 1976, originally in Hatchback form, powered by a 1256cc engine and intended to slot into the Vauxhall renge below the Viva. In 1976, at the instigation of new chairman Bob Price, Vauxhall decided to increase their profile in international rallying in order to compete in international rallying, the car had to be homologated; for Group 4. this meant building 400 production vehicles for public sale. Vauxhall created a far more powerful Chevette variant by fitting the 2.3 litre slant-four engine, using a 16-valve cylinder head which Vauxhall was developing - though the rally cars used the Lotus 16-valve head until a rule change by the FIA banned them in 1978. The HS became a great success as a rally car, chalking up notable wins

BLACK MAGIC

is a styling excercise hand built in Vauxhalls styling department under design chief Wayne Cherry as an experiment in aerodynamics and ground effects, Subject to constant change at various times wearing different body panels and powered by different engines.and even differnt paints. At the height of wind tunnel testing it had front side skirts that touched the ground. In 1993 it was driven by Jimmy McRae in the Orient Express Challenge, beating the train.

It was equipped with a luxury interior with heated leather seats, leather trim a dash with real wood inserts tailored carpets with press stud removable over mats, it was considered for production bt Panther cars and would have been powered by a turbo engine but the costs were prohibitive
