All factory-built PAs were four-door saloons: the estate cars were converted by Friary of Basingstoke, Hampshire

Edward D Abbott retired from his company in 1950, selling the business to R Gordon Sutherland a former MD of Aston Martin (1932-46), seeking an alternative to the traditional and dwindling bespoke coachbuilt market and sought a new market, quickly establishing the company offering estate conversions, on behalf of manufacturers noteably the Ford Mk.1 and Mark II Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac..

He was also ran a Vauxhall agency from his car sales showroom in Old Windsor, so when Vauxhall sort a partner for the conversion of their new PA range of Velox and Cresta, they naturally approached Sutherland. Designed by Sutherlands designer Peter Woodgate the Abbott Estate came to fruition. The reason the car was not named Abbott rather than Friary was due to the Abbott names long association with Ford being unlikely to please Vauxhalls owners GM

Many thanks for a fantabulous
