The four cylinder Mark 2 Consul and its six cylinder Mark 2 siblings the Zephyr and Zodiac Mk.II's were in 1956 sharing the same totally restyled bodies. The 6-cylinder cars' engines were enlarged to 2,553 cc with power output correspondingly raised to 86 bhp. The wheelbase was increased by three inches and width increased to 69 inches. The weight distribution and turning circle were also improved. Top speed increased to 88 mph and fuel consumption improved to 28mpg. The Zodiac was the top of the range model, slightly altered to distinguish it from the lesser variants, having more elaborate tail-end styling and at the front a different grille. The auxiliary lamps and wing mirrors were deleted from the Zodiac range but it retained two-tone paint, whitewall tyres, chrome wheel-trim embellishers and gold plated badges.

As well as a 3-speed manual gearbox there was an optional overdrive and from 1956 a Borg Warner DG automatic transmission. At first drum brakes were fitted all round but front discs became optional in 1960 and standard from mid 1961

The model was updated in late 1959 as the Lowline model, with a reduced roof height and a chrome windscreen surround. The earlier cars were retrospectively referred to as Highline models

The two-door convertible version was offered with power-operated hood, however because of the structural weaknesses inherent in the construction of convertibles, few convertibles are known to have survived to this day. A convertible with overdrive was tested by The Motor magazine in 1961; it had a top speed of 88.3 mph and could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 17.0 seconds. The test car list price was £1,193.

Many thanks for a fantabulous
