18 ALD C289 (1989) - No Wheels on my Wagon

ALD C289 (1989) Engine 3900cc

Chassis Number 002

Race Number 177 Frank Lyons

The Group C prototype era of 1982-93 was a golden era of sportscar racing, the class limited fuel but otherwise the norms of engine capacity and weight were set aside and designers had more or less a blank canvass. The racing attracted some of the major companies and naturally costs spiraled necessitating a less expensive addition in the guise of C2 for smaller manufacturers and privateers. The Cosworth DFL V8 and BMW M1 straight six were the most popular choice of engine, with C2 attracting manufacturers such as Spice, Tiga, Alba, Ecurie Ecosse and ALD.

ALD was created by French motor sport enthusiast Louis Descartes in 1984 with there first car ALD 1 achieving a LeMans finish in 1985. ALD continued to develope the car with new chassis 02,03 and 04 following. and 05 and 06 built as customer cars

C289 represented a quantum leap and was campaigned in all rounds of the 1989 WSC including LeMans. In 1990 with the demise of C2 , a 3.5 litre Cosworth DFZ was installed and again the car competed in all WSC rounds, the team consisting of just four full time employees, a plastics moulder and a dozen volunteers they took on the might of the manufacturers in Group C, despite a myriad of small sponors the budget was always ttght and regular driver Francois Migualt was often teamed with less experienced drivers.

Despite its designation ALD C289 002 is believed to be the only chassis built it raced throughout 1989 as race number 177, and throughout 1990 as number 106 (LeMans) and 35 (WSC). ALD sold C289 at the end of 1991, powered by a 3 litre Peugeot engine it contested LeMans in 1992 for a fourth and final time, kept by its owner until 2001. Between 2001-06 it professionally rebuilt from a bare tub at a cost of around £ 88,500 and returned to its original livery, as it appeared at LeMans in 1989 now powered with a period Cosworth DFR engine it is eligable to run in both C1 and C2 categories
