The 3rd generation Mercury Grand Marquis was launched for the 1998 model year, its design saw an evelutionary change from the previously well received generation. In a major change, its Ford Crown Victoria counterpart was given a more conservative exterior for 1998, adopting the formal rear roofline of the Grand Marquis for the rest of its production run.

The third-generation Grand Marquis retained the Panther chassis from its predecessors, lengthened in wheelbase to 114.7 inches, with upgraded handling stability and the four-wheel disc brakes were given dual-piston calipers for the front rotors., requiring the use of 16-inch wheels., for 1999 ABS became standard

The third-generation Grand Marquis retained the same powertrain as the 1995-1997 Grand Marquis, with a 4.6L Modular V8 and a 4-speed 4R70W automatic transmission. For 1998, the standard-equipment V8 (with single exhaust) was increased in output to 200 hp or 215 bhp with dual exhausts., for 2001-02 power increased to 220bhp (single) and 235 bhp (twin).
