Based on the second generation K5 Chevrolet Blazer (1973-91) The M1009 CUCV was a production militarized version of the civilian K5. The differences include a lack of air-conditioning an additional leaf spring to beef up the suspension, a hybrid 12/24 volt electrical system, (most of the truck runs on the 12 v system, it has two separate 12v alternators wired in series. Only the glow plug, starter and jumper cable are wired to the 24v terminals, although the glow plug can run on 12v) black out head lights and a rifle rack. The majority were painted an olive drab green, or woodland camouflage pattern, or in tan for those intended for desert operations. All were powered by a 6200 cc diesel unit.

Some of the decommissioned trucks ended up with the Law Enforcement agencies or National Guard
