The first generation was given a mid life facelift in September 1996 and was replaced by a second generation for the 2001 model year.

The Facelift version of the Mark I Sierra, sometimes referred to a Mark 2 was introduced in October 1996, addressing three of the critiscms aimed at the original, its bland styling, the poor headlight performance and the cramped rear legroom. The facelift left only the doors, the roof, and the rear quarter panels on the estate the same as the original model. The most notable change was the introduction of the grille and larger, wraparound lighting units. The saloon version featured some distinctive rear lights.

The Mondeo competed in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) between 1993 and 2000. With cars prepared by Andy Rouse Engineering (1993-95) with Alan Menu and Paul Radisich, Radisich winning the Drivers title in 1993 and 1994, for seasons 1996-98 West Surrey Racing with Prodrive taking over for seasons 1999-00. For 2000 the team expanded to running three works cars, and went on to dominate the season with Mondeo mounted drivers finishing the season in 1st Alan Menu, 2nd Anthony Reid and 3rd Rickard Rydell in the Drivers Championship.

A complete overhaul of the BTCC following the 2000 season saw the supertouring regulations scrapped as the series moved towards less expensive but slower race cars. Ford withdrew from BTCC competition prior to 2001.
